robot, clone, human

We are a collaboration involving UC Berkeley's Alpha Lab, Interactive University Project, and the San Francisco Unified School District. We are partially funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation.

Who's involved...

We have developed a teaching unit—what we call the Robot, Clone, Human Learning Object Package—geared for high school students to learn about biotechnology, bioethics, and robotics.  This Learning Object Package provides five hours of self-contained instruction that can be incorporated into any existing science curriculum.   We make use of the Tele-Actor, an inventive new learning technology that allows students to participate in a live “remote field trip” to a biotechnology laboratory.

Our Learning Object Package contains six 50-minute Learning Object Modules, each of which addresses a specific topic and contains preparation materials for the teacher, slides for in-class lectures, discussion ideas, hand-on activities, and homework assignments.  You can access our entire Learning Object Package online as well as read about our own experiences teaching the Learning Object Package to ninth-grade biology students.

Our website includes:

     Learning Object Package Overview

Learning Object Module 1: Introduction to Biotechnology

Learning Object Module 2: Biotechnology Case Study: Cloning

Learning Object Module 3: Introduction to Robotics

Learning Object Module 4: The Basic Components of Robots

Learning Object Module 5: The Tele-Actor

Learning Object Module 6: Assessment and Evaluation
